A firewall is only as good as its configuration
Almost every business has a firewall. Far fewer have one that is configured well, kept up to date and actually watched. Over time, rules pile up: temporary exceptions that were never removed, ports opened for a vendor years ago, remote access left wide open. Firmware falls behind, and security subscriptions quietly expire. Attackers scan the internet constantly for exactly these weaknesses, and firewalls and VPN appliances are among the most targeted devices.
A firewall is not a box you install and forget. It needs proper design, secure configuration, regular updates and someone who reviews what it’s telling you.
ITConnect provides complete firewall solutions: we help you choose the right next-generation firewall, install and configure it to best practice, and then manage it as a service. We monitor it, apply updates, review and clean up rules, manage VPN access and investigate security events, so your firewall stays strong as your business and threats change.

What is a firewall?
A firewall is a security device or software that controls network traffic, allowing or blocking connections based on rules. It sits between your internal network and the internet, and often between internal segments, acting as a gatekeeper. A basic firewall decides based on addresses and ports. A modern next-generation firewall also understands applications, users and content: it can block malware downloads, stop access to malicious websites, prevent known attacks and control which apps people use.
Types of firewall
| Type | How it works | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Packet-filtering | Allows or blocks traffic by address and port | Simple routers, basic filtering |
| Stateful inspection | Tracks connections and allows replies to approved traffic | Standard business firewalls |
| Proxy / application-level | Inspects traffic at the application level | Web proxies, specialised use |
| Next-generation firewall (NGFW) | Adds application control, intrusion prevention, web filtering and malware inspection | Most businesses today |
| Web application firewall (WAF) | Protects websites and APIs from web attacks | Public websites, portals |
| Cloud firewall / FWaaS | Firewall delivered from the cloud | Remote workforces, cloud workloads |

Why firewall rule reviews matter
Old firewalls often carry hundreds of rules, many unused or too broad, such as “allow any” rules created for testing. Each one is a potential door for attackers. During a rule review, we identify rules with no recent traffic, overlapping or shadowed rules, rules allowing more than necessary, and rules without a clear owner or purpose. We propose changes, agree them with you, and apply them carefully, making your firewall simpler and safer.
Firewall best practices we apply
Deny by default and allow only what’s needed. Separate networks for staff, guests, servers, CCTV and IoT. MFA for all VPN and admin access. Admin interfaces never exposed to the internet. Security services enabled and subscriptions active. Logs sent to monitoring. Configuration backups after every change. Firmware kept current, especially for VPN vulnerabilities.
Making VPN and remote access safe
Remote access is one of the most common ways attackers get in. Old VPNs with password-only logins, unpatched VPN appliances and remote desktop exposed to the internet are frequent causes of ransomware incidents. We secure remote access by enforcing multi-factor authentication, patching VPN gateways promptly, limiting each user to the systems they need, checking device health before connecting where supported, and monitoring for unusual logins. For many businesses, zero-trust network access (ZTNA) is now a better option than a traditional VPN, because it gives access to specific applications instead of the whole network. See Zero Trust Security
Firewalls for branches
For businesses with several locations, we deploy firewalls at each site with centralised management, so policies are consistent and changes are made once. SD-WAN features built into modern firewalls choose the best internet link for each application and fail over automatically if one line goes down, keeping calls and cloud apps running.
Signs your firewall needs replacing
The model is at or near end of support. Internet speeds have increased but the firewall can’t keep up with security features turned on. You need features it doesn’t support, such as SD-WAN or ZTNA. VPN users complain about slow connections. Or the security subscriptions have lapsed and renewing them no longer makes sense for an ageing device.
How to choose firewall solutions
Size the firewall for your internet speed with all security features enabled, not the headline throughput. Check that it supports the remote access method you need, central management for multiple sites, and integration with your monitoring. Consider the vendor’s patch record and the availability of local expertise. Most importantly, plan who will manage it after installation.

Who needs managed firewall services
Any business without a dedicated network security engineer, companies with several branches, businesses that rely on remote access, regulated organisations needing evidence of firewall reviews, and companies whose firewall has been “set and forgotten” since installation.
Case study
A trading company with several branches had a cluttered firewall rule set and an unpatched VPN. We replaced it with FortiGate firewalls, cleaned up the rules, enabled MFA and set up monitoring.
Firewall Management questions, answered
What is a firewall?
A security device or software that controls network traffic, allowing or blocking connections based on rules.
What are the types of firewall?
Packet-filtering, stateful inspection, proxy, next-generation (NGFW), web application firewalls and cloud firewalls.
What is a managed firewall service?
A service where a provider monitors, updates and manages your firewall on an ongoing basis.
Do you install firewalls?
Yes. We supply, install and configure next-generation firewalls for offices and branches.
Can you manage our existing firewall?
Yes. We review and harden it first, then manage it.
How often should firewall rules be reviewed?
At least once or twice a year, and after major changes.
Do you support high availability?
Yes. We deploy firewall pairs so traffic continues if one unit fails.
What happens if a critical firewall vulnerability is announced?
We assess exposure and apply patches or mitigations urgently.
Do you offer a web application firewall for our website?
Yes. We can deploy or configure a WAF in front of your website or portal to block common web attacks.
Can you help with a firewall audit for compliance?
Yes. We review configuration and rules against best practice and the relevant framework, and give you a report.
Do you manage firewalls in the cloud?
Yes, including cloud-native firewalls and virtual firewall appliances in Azure and AWS.
Will we keep admin access to our firewall?
Yes. You keep full ownership and access, and all changes are documented.
How long does a firewall replacement take?
Usually a few days of preparation and a short planned cut-over outside working hours.
Can you block specific websites or apps for staff?
Yes. Web filtering and application control let you set policies by user group and schedule.
Do you support firewalls outside Dubai?
Yes. Firewalls are managed remotely across the UAE, with on-site visits for installations and hardware issues.
