Know exactly where your IT stands
Many business owners and managers don’t have a clear picture of their IT. Nobody is quite sure how old the servers are, whether backups work, which licences are being paid for, who has admin passwords, or how exposed the business would be if a key system failed. Problems surface one at a time, usually at the worst moment.
An IT audit, sometimes called an IT health check or IT assessment, gives you that picture. It reviews every major part of your IT environment, compares it with good practice, identifies risks and inefficiencies, and recommends what to do first. It’s the starting point for better IT, whether you’re planning a budget, changing IT providers, preparing for growth, or simply want peace of mind.
ITConnect carries out IT audits for businesses across Dubai and the UAE. Our engineers review your infrastructure, devices, cloud services, backups, licences, security basics, documentation and support processes, then deliver a clear report with risk ratings, quick wins and a practical roadmap, written for management as well as IT.

What is an IT audit?
An IT audit is a structured review of an organisation’s information technology environment to assess whether systems are reliable, secure, well-managed and aligned with business needs. Depending on its purpose, an IT audit may focus on infrastructure and operations, information security, compliance with a standard, or IT governance. A practical IT health check for a small or mid-size business typically covers all major areas at a high level and produces a prioritised list of risks and improvements.
IT audit checklist
- Is there an up-to-date inventory of devices, servers, network equipment and software?
- Are servers, firewalls and devices still supported and receiving updates?
- Are operating systems and applications patched regularly?
- Is multi-factor authentication enabled for email, VPN and admin accounts?
- Is endpoint protection installed and active on every device?
- Are backups running, stored off-site or in the cloud, protected from ransomware, and tested?
- Is Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace data backed up?
- Are admin passwords documented, secured and owned by the company?
- Are leavers’ accounts disabled promptly?
- Are licences matched to actual users, with no waste or gaps?
- Is the network documented, with separate networks for guests and devices?
- Is there a process for IT requests, with response times?
- Are domain names, SSL certificates and key contracts tracked for renewal?
- Is there a plan for what happens if a key system or person is unavailable?

IT audit vs security assessment
| IT audit / health check | Security assessment | |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Whole IT environment | Cyber security in depth |
| Focus | Reliability, support, licences, backups, costs, basic security | Threats, controls, vulnerabilities, compliance |
| Output | Health scores and IT roadmap | Security risk ratings and security roadmap |
| Best for | General review, budgeting, provider changes | Security concerns, compliance, client questionnaires |
Many clients start with an IT audit and follow up with a deeper security assessment. See Security Assessment
What IT audits usually uncover
Backups that don’t work
Jobs failing silently, backups stored on the same server, or no backup of Microsoft 365.
Unsupported equipment
Firewalls, servers and operating systems past end of support.
Missing MFA
Email and VPN protected only by passwords.
Too many admins
Shared or excessive admin accounts, including former staff.
Licence waste
Paying for users who left or for higher plans than needed.
No documentation
Passwords and configurations known by one person.
Flat networks
Guests, staff, servers and cameras on the same network.
Single points of failure
One internet line, one server or one person critical to operations.
Most of these are straightforward to fix once identified, and many deliver immediate savings or risk reduction.
When to commission an IT audit
Before changing IT provider or staff, to understand what you’re handing over. After an incident, to find root causes and other risks. When new management or investors arrive, for an independent baseline. Before major projects such as cloud migration, office moves or ERP. When budgeting, to plan replacements and investments. Annually, as good practice.
What you receive
An executive summary with an overall IT health score; scores for each area; a list of findings ranked critical, high, medium or low; estimated effort for each recommendation; a 30/60/90-day action plan; an asset and licence summary; and technical appendices. Reports are written in plain English, with technical detail separated for IT staff.
Choosing IT audit companies in Dubai
Look for auditors with hands-on experience running IT environments, a clear methodology and examples of reports. Check that they cover the whole environment, not just one vendor’s products, and that recommendations are practical and prioritised. Make sure findings are shared confidentially and that there’s no obligation to buy follow-up services.
Turning the audit into action
An audit is only valuable if findings are fixed. We separate quick wins, such as enabling MFA, fixing backups or removing unused accounts, which can often be done within days, from projects that need budget and planning, such as replacing servers or redesigning the network. Each recommendation has an owner and timeline. If you choose, our engineers can deliver the fixes and re-audit after six or twelve months to show progress.
Who needs an IT audit
Businesses without in-house IT expertise, companies relying on one IT person, firms changing providers, organisations after incidents or rapid growth, and management teams who want an independent baseline before investing in technology.
Case study
A Sharjah manufacturing company commissioned an IT audit after a server failure. We found backups that hadn’t been running, unsupported servers and unused licences. Within 60 days, backups were fixed and tested, licences right-sized and a replacement plan agreed.
