The backup you can’t restore isn’t a backup

Every business eventually faces data loss: a server disk fails, someone deletes the wrong folder, a laptop is stolen, a software update corrupts a database, or ransomware encrypts everything it can reach, including backups connected to the network. The difference between a bad day and a business-threatening crisis is whether you can recover quickly and completely.

Many organisations believe they’re protected until they need to restore. Backups turn out to have stopped months ago, to cover only some systems, to be stored on the same server they were meant to protect, or to take days to restore. Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace data is often not backed up at all, on the assumption that the provider does it.

ITConnect designs and manages backup and disaster recovery for UAE businesses. We protect servers, virtual machines, databases, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and endpoints, keep copies off-site and ransomware-resistant, and build recovery plans with clear priorities. Most importantly, we test restores regularly, so recovery is proven before you need it.

What you get

Server and VM backup

Physical servers, virtual machines and applications backed up with application-aware consistency.

Database backup

SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL and ERP databases with point-in-time recovery options.

Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace backup

Email, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams and Google Drive backed up independently.

Endpoint backup

Laptops and desktops protected wherever staff work.

Immutable and off-site copies

Backups that can’t be altered or deleted for a set period, stored away from your main systems.

Disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS)

Critical systems replicated to the cloud so they can be started there if your site fails.

Recovery planning

Recovery objectives, priorities and step-by-step runbooks.

Monitoring and testing

Daily backup checks and scheduled restore tests, with reports.

What is backup?

A backup is a copy of data stored separately from the original so it can be restored if the original is lost, damaged or encrypted. Backups can be full copies or incremental changes, taken on a schedule and kept for a retention period. A backup protects against data loss; on its own, it doesn’t guarantee how quickly systems can run again.

What is disaster recovery?

Disaster recovery (DR) is the set of plans, processes and technology that restore IT systems and operations after a major disruption, such as a ransomware attack, site failure, fire, flood or prolonged outage. Disaster recovery focuses on getting critical systems running again within agreed timeframes, often by failing over to replicated systems in another location or the cloud.

Two measures guide DR design:

MeasureMeaningExample
RPO (Recovery Point Objective)How much data you can afford to lose, in time“No more than 1 hour of data”
RTO (Recovery Time Objective)How quickly systems must be running again“ERP back within 4 hours”

How we work

  1. Assess

Systems, data, current backups, risks and business priorities.

  2. Define objectives

RPO and RTO for each system.

  3. Design

    Backup, replication and DR architecture.

  4. Implement

Agents, storage, policies and replication configured.

  5. Test

    Restore tests and DR exercises.

  6. Monitor and report

Daily checks, monthly reports and regular testing.

Protecting backups from ransomware

Modern ransomware groups deliberately search for backups and delete or encrypt them before launching an attack, so they can force payment. Protecting backups requires several layers: immutable storage that can’t be altered for a set retention period, separate credentials and MFA for backup systems, backup servers isolated from the main network, at least one copy off-site or in the cloud, and monitoring for unusual deletion or encryption activity. We design backup systems on the assumption that attackers will try to reach them.

Who needs backup and DR

Every business that relies on data, which today means every business. It’s especially critical for companies with on-premise servers, ERP and finance systems, healthcare and legal records, e-commerce operations, and anyone required by clients, insurers or regulators to demonstrate recovery capability.

Case study

A Dubai distribution company was hit by ransomware that encrypted its file server and ERP. Because immutable backups were in place, we restored critical systems without paying a ransom.

Backup & Disaster Recovery questions, answered

What is backup?

A copy of data stored separately so it can be restored if the original is lost or damaged.

What is disaster recovery?

Plans and technology that restore IT systems and operations after a major disruption.

What should a disaster recovery plan include?

Critical systems, RTO and RPO, priorities, roles, recovery steps, communication and testing.

Does Microsoft back up our Microsoft 365 data?

Microsoft keeps the service running and offers limited retention, but independent backup is recommended for full protection.

What are immutable backups?

Backups that can’t be changed or deleted for a set period, protecting them from ransomware and mistakes.

How often should backups be tested?

Regularly, at least quarterly for critical systems, plus after major changes.

Can backups stay in the UAE?

Yes, UAE-hosted backup storage is available for data residency needs.

How long does it take to restore a server?

It depends on size and method: individual files take minutes; full servers can take hours, or minutes with DR replication.

Can you back up our laptops?

Yes, endpoint backup protects laptops wherever staff work.

What retention period should we keep?

It depends on business and legal needs; commonly daily backups for weeks plus monthly copies for longer. We help you set it.
