Moving to the cloud, without the risk
Most UAE organisations now use cloud services in some form, but many still run important systems on ageing servers in an office or old server room. Hardware warranties expire, server rooms overheat, remote staff struggle to connect, and disaster recovery is a hope rather than a plan. Moving to the cloud promises flexibility, resilience and less hardware to manage.
But cloud migrations can go wrong. Applications break because dependencies weren’t understood. Performance suffers because systems were sized incorrectly. Costs grow because nobody planned how resources would be used. Security gaps appear when servers are moved without proper configuration. And downtime during cut-over disrupts the business.
ITConnect’s cloud migration services follow a proven, structured approach. We assess what you have, decide the right destination and method for each workload, build a secure cloud foundation, migrate in planned waves with testing and rollback, and optimise everything afterwards. Whether you’re moving a single application, your whole server estate, or email and files to Microsoft 365, we make the move predictable.

What is cloud migration?
Cloud migration is the process of moving digital assets, such as servers, applications, databases, files and email, from on-premises infrastructure or another hosting provider to a cloud environment. It can also mean moving between clouds. A migration might be as simple as moving mailboxes to Microsoft 365 or as complex as re-architecting applications to use cloud-native services.
Cloud migration strategy: the “R” approaches
Not every workload should be migrated the same way. Industry practice describes several approaches, often called the “Rs”:
| Strategy | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Rehost (“lift and shift”) | Move servers to the cloud largely unchanged | File server moved to an Azure VM |
| Replatform | Small changes to use managed services | Database moved to a managed database service |
| Refactor / re-architect | Redesign applications for cloud-native services | App rebuilt with containers and serverless |
| Repurchase | Replace with a SaaS product | On-premise email replaced by Microsoft 365 |
| Retire | Switch off what’s no longer needed | Unused legacy application decommissioned |
| Retain | Keep on-premises for now | System with hardware dependencies |
| Relocate | Move a virtualized environment to the cloud as-is | VMware environment moved to a cloud-hosted VMware service |
A good cloud migration strategy assigns the right approach to each workload, balancing speed, risk and long-term benefit.
AWS migration and Azure migration
We migrate workloads to both major public clouds. Azure migration is often the natural choice for Microsoft-centric organisations using Windows Server, SQL Server, Active Directory and Microsoft 365, with Azure regions in the UAE. AWS migration suits organisations with Linux, open-source or cloud-native workloads, or those already using AWS services, with an AWS region in the UAE. Both providers offer migration tools for discovery, replication and database migration, which we use alongside our own processes. See AWS and Microsoft Azure
How we work
1
Discover
Automated discovery tools and interviews to map every server, application and dependency.
2
Assess
Performance data, licensing, compliance and readiness for each workload.
3
Plan
Destination, strategy and migration waves, with a timeline and risk plan.
4
Build the foundation
Secure landing zone with networking, identity, policies, monitoring and backup.
5
Pilot
Migrate a low-risk workload first to prove the process.
6
Migrate in waves
Groups of related workloads moved together, tested with users.
7
Cut over
Planned switchover, usually out of hours, with rollback options.
8
Optimise and hand over
Right-sizing, documentation and ongoing support.
Not sure which hosting fits?
Tell us what you run and who uses it. We’ll recommend the right option for each workload.
Mistakes we help you avoid
Moving without understanding dependencies
Applications that talk to each other must move together or keep connectivity.
Copying on-premise sizes
Servers sized for peak years ago are often oversized; others need more. We size from real performance data.
Skipping the foundation
Moving workloads before identity, networking, security and backup are in place creates risk.
Ignoring licensing
Some software licences don’t transfer to the cloud, or need different terms.
No rollback plan
Every cut-over needs a way back if testing fails.
Forgetting users
Changes to drive mappings, application addresses or sign-in need clear communication.
Treating migration as the finish line
Optimisation, monitoring and governance after migration keep the cloud healthy.
Security during and after migration
We build security into the landing zone: identity with MFA and least privilege, network segmentation, encryption, policy guardrails preventing risky configurations, centralised logging, and backups. Migrated servers are patched and hardened, and old firewall rules are reviewed rather than copied blindly. After migration, cloud security posture tools and our SOC can monitor continuously. See Cloud Security
Migrating email and files
For many organisations, the first cloud step is moving email to Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and file shares to SharePoint, OneDrive or Google Drive. We plan folder structures and permissions, migrate data in the background, and switch users over with minimal disruption. See Email Hosting
Who needs cloud migration services
Organisations with ageing on-premise servers, companies moving offices, businesses needing better remote access or disaster recovery, firms consolidating after mergers, and those who started cloud adoption without a plan and now need structure.
Keeping the cloud under control after migration
Once workloads are in the cloud, new resources can be created in minutes, which is powerful but can quickly lead to sprawl. We set up governance: naming and tagging standards, approved regions, role-based access, budgets and usage alerts, policy guardrails, and regular reviews of unused or oversized resources. This keeps your cloud organised, secure and efficient as it grows. See Cloud Cost Optimization
Choosing a cloud migration company
Ask how the provider discovers dependencies, whether they build a secure foundation before migrating, how they test and roll back, what experience they have with your applications and chosen cloud, and what support they offer after migration. A clear, written plan with waves, owners and rollback steps is the best sign of a reliable partner.
Case study
A Dubai professional services firm migrated its on-premise servers to Azure UAE regions. Remote access improved, disaster recovery was added, and the office server room was decommissioned.
Cloud Migration questions, answered
What is cloud migration?
Moving servers, applications, databases, files and email from on-premises or other hosting to a cloud environment.
What is a cloud migration strategy?
A plan that decides the destination and approach for each workload, such as rehost, replatform, refactor, repurchase, retire or retain.
How long does a cloud migration take?
From days for email or a single server to several months for large estates.
Will there be downtime?
Usually only a short planned outage during cut-over, scheduled out of hours.
Should we choose AWS or Azure?
It depends on your applications, skills and existing Microsoft investments. We compare both for your workloads.
Can we migrate to UAE cloud regions?
Yes, both Azure and AWS have UAE regions.
Do you manage the cloud after migration?
Yes, with optional managed cloud services.
Can you migrate our ERP to the cloud?
Yes, including Odoo and other ERP databases, with performance testing before go-live.
What happens to our old servers?
We decommission them securely, wipe data and arrange recycling. See IT Asset Management
Do you train our team on the cloud?
Yes. Handover includes training on monitoring, backups and day-to-day administration.
Can we migrate in stages?
Yes. Most migrations happen in waves, starting with low-risk workloads.
