Your data is your most valuable asset, and your biggest liability
Customer records, employee files, contracts, financial reports, designs and pricing all live somewhere in your systems, often in more places than you think: shared drives, laptops, email attachments, OneDrive folders, WhatsApp chats and personal cloud accounts. Every copy is a chance for it to leak.
Most data leaks aren’t sophisticated hacks. They’re everyday mistakes: a spreadsheet of customer data emailed to the wrong person, a folder shared with “anyone with the link”, a departing employee uploading files to personal storage, a laptop lost at the airport. And with data protection laws now in force in the UAE, leaks carry legal and reputational consequences, not just embarrassment.
Data loss prevention (DLP) helps you control this. It discovers and classifies sensitive data, applies protection such as encryption and access restrictions, and watches how data moves, blocking or warning when someone tries to send it where it shouldn’t go. ITConnect designs and manages data protection programmes that combine DLP technology, sensible policies and staff awareness, without getting in the way of everyday work.

What you get
Data discovery
Scanning email, file shares, SharePoint, OneDrive and endpoints to find sensitive data such as Emirates ID numbers, passports, credit card numbers, salaries and health information.
Classification and labelling
Simple labels such as Public, Internal, Confidential and Restricted, applied manually or automatically, with protection attached.
DLP policies
Rules that warn, block or require justification when sensitive data is shared externally, uploaded or copied to USB.
Encryption
Encryption of laptops, email and labelled documents, so data stays protected even if it leaves.
Access control
Least-privilege access reviews for sensitive folders and systems.
Insider risk monitoring
Alerts for unusual behaviour such as mass downloads before resignation.
Reporting
Dashboards showing where sensitive data lives and how it moves.
What is DLP (data loss prevention)?
DLP stands for Data Loss Prevention: technology and processes that detect and prevent sensitive data from being lost, misused or shared with unauthorised people. DLP tools recognise sensitive information using patterns, keywords, labels and machine learning, then apply policies when that data is used.
| Type of DLP | Where it works | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Email DLP | Outgoing messages | Warn when sending passport numbers externally |
| Cloud DLP | SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, SaaS | Block public sharing of confidential files |
| Endpoint DLP | Laptops and desktops | Stop copying labelled files to USB or personal cloud |
| Network DLP | Web traffic | Detect sensitive uploads to unapproved sites |
What is data protection?
Data protection means safeguarding data, especially personal data, from loss, misuse and unauthorised access, and handling it lawfully and fairly. It combines security measures such as access control, encryption and backups, with governance: knowing what data you collect, why, how long you keep it, who it’s shared with, and how individuals’ rights are respected.
UAE data protection law: a plain-English overview
The UAE’s federal Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL), Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021, sets rules for how organisations process the personal data of individuals in the UAE. It covers lawful processing, consent and other legal bases, data subject rights such as access and correction, security measures, breach notification and cross-border transfers. Some areas, such as certain government, health and financial data, are covered by other specific laws, and the DIFC and ADGM free zones have their own data protection laws. Implementing regulations and guidance continue to develop.
In practical terms, most businesses need to know what personal data they hold, protect it with appropriate security, limit access, keep it only as long as needed, handle requests from individuals, and be ready to respond to breaches. DLP and data protection controls make these obligations far easier to meet and demonstrate.

Microsoft Purview DLP
For businesses on Microsoft 365, Microsoft Purview provides sensitivity labels, DLP for email, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams and endpoints, and insider risk tools, depending on licensing. Many organisations already own some of these capabilities. We design and roll them out in stages so policies are accurate and users aren’t overwhelmed.
How data usually leaks
Misdirected emails
Autocomplete sends a file to the wrong “Ahmed” or “Sarah”.
Over-sharing in the cloud
“Anyone with the link” sharing that spreads beyond the intended recipient.
Departing employees
Customer lists and files copied before leaving.
Lost devices
Unencrypted laptops and USB drives.
Shadow IT
Files uploaded to personal cloud storage, AI tools or messaging apps.
Compromised accounts
Attackers downloading mailboxes and files after phishing.
Each needs a different control, which is why data protection combines technology, policy and training.
Data retention and minimisation
Keeping data longer than needed increases risk. We help you set retention policies so old data is archived or deleted automatically according to legal and business requirements, and that new data collection is limited to what’s actually needed. Less data means less to protect and less to lose.
Who needs DLP
Healthcare providers, financial services, HR and payroll teams, law and accounting firms, real estate and property managers, e-commerce businesses, and any company handling Emirates ID, passport, salary, health or payment data.
Getting buy-in from staff
DLP succeeds when people understand it. Policy tips that explain why a file is sensitive, a simple labelling scheme with four levels, and a quick way to request exceptions for legitimate business needs make data protection feel helpful rather than obstructive. We include short training and communication templates in every rollout.
Reporting for management and auditors
Monthly reports show sensitive data locations, labelled content, policy matches, blocked and overridden actions, and trends over time. They give management visibility of data risk and provide evidence for audits and data protection obligations.
Case study
A healthcare provider discovered files containing patient and Emirates ID data spread across shared drives. We classified and moved them to protected locations and enabled DLP to control external sharing.
Data Protection questions, answered
What is DLP?
Data Loss Prevention: technology and processes that detect and stop sensitive data from being lost, misused or shared with unauthorised people.
What is the UAE data protection law?
The federal Personal Data Protection Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021), which sets rules for processing personal data in the UAE. DIFC and ADGM have their own laws.
Will DLP block people from working?
Not if it’s rolled out properly. We start in monitor mode, tune policies, and use warnings before blocking.
What data does DLP recognise?
Built-in types such as credit card numbers and passport numbers, plus custom patterns such as Emirates ID numbers, employee IDs or project codes.
Do we need DLP if we have antivirus?
Yes. Antivirus stops malware; DLP stops sensitive data leaving, including through honest mistakes.
Can DLP stop data leaving via USB?
Yes, endpoint DLP can block or audit copying sensitive files to USB drives.
Do you help with data protection policies?
Yes, alongside our compliance services.
How long does a DLP rollout take?
Typically six to twelve weeks, including discovery, monitor mode and tuning before enforcement.
What happens if there's a data breach?
Our incident response team helps contain it, investigate and support any required notifications. See Incident Response
Does DLP work with Google Workspace?
Yes, Google Workspace includes DLP features for Gmail and Drive, which we can configure.
Can you scan our file servers for personal data?
Yes. Data discovery scans on-premise file shares as well as cloud storage, and reports what sensitive data was found and where.
Is DLP only for large companies?
No. Many SMEs on Microsoft 365 can start with built-in DLP features and grow from there.
