Do more with less hardware

Not long ago, every application needed its own physical server: one for files, one for accounting, one for email, one for the domain controller. Each server used only a small fraction of its capacity, but still needed power, cooling, space, a warranty and maintenance. When one failed, the application on it went down until the hardware was repaired.

Virtualization changed that. A single physical server, called a host, can now run many virtual servers, each with its own operating system and applications, completely isolated from the others. Two or three hosts working together in a cluster can run an entire company’s servers, move them between hosts automatically if hardware fails, and add new servers in minutes.

ITConnect designs, builds and supports virtualization environments for businesses across the UAE. We work with the three leading platforms, Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware vSphere and Nutanix, and we recommend the one that fits your budget, skills and plans, not the one with the biggest margin. We also help companies facing large VMware renewal increases decide whether to stay, optimise or migrate.

What you get

Platform selection

A side-by-side comparison of Hyper-V, VMware and Nutanix for your environment, covering licensing, hardware, features and five-year cost.

Design and build

Hosts, clusters, shared storage, networking and management tools designed for performance and resilience.

P2V and V2V migration

Physical-to-virtual conversion of existing servers, and virtual-to-virtual migration between platforms, with careful planning to minimise downtime.

High availability

If a host fails, its virtual machines restart automatically on another host, usually within minutes.

Backup and replication

Virtual-machine-level backups and replication to a second site or the cloud for disaster recovery.

Ongoing support

Patching, monitoring, capacity planning and performance tuning.

What is virtualization?

Virtualization is technology that lets one physical computer run several independent virtual computers at the same time. A layer of software called a hypervisor sits between the hardware and the virtual machines. It shares out processor, memory, storage and network resources, and keeps each virtual machine isolated from the others.

To the applications inside, a virtual machine looks and behaves exactly like a physical server. But because it is really a set of files, it can be backed up as a whole, copied, moved to another host while running, or restored quickly after a failure.

Types of virtualization

Signs you’re ready to virtualize

You have three or more physical servers. Your servers use only a small part of their capacity. Hardware warranties are expiring. Restoring a server would take more than a day. Or you need to create test environments regularly. If two or more of these apply, virtualization will almost certainly save money and reduce risk.

How we work

  1. Assess

We inventory your current servers, their resource use and dependencies.

  2. Recommend

Platform, hardware sizing and licensing recommendations.

  3. Build

Hosts, storage, networking and management configured and tested.

  4. Migrate

Servers moved in planned windows, tested with your users.

  5. Support

    Monitoring, patching and capacity planning.

Benefits you can measure

Fewer physical servers means less hardware to buy, less power and cooling, and less space. Faster recovery means a failed server is back in minutes rather than days. Snapshots before updates mean changes can be rolled back. New servers can be created in minutes for projects or testing. And because virtual machines are independent of hardware, upgrading the hardware later becomes a simple move instead of a rebuild.

Case study

A distribution company consolidated its ageing physical servers onto a Hyper-V cluster, reducing power use and cutting recovery time from days to minutes.

Virtualization questions, answered

What is virtualization?

Software that splits one physical server into several virtual servers, each running its own operating system and applications.

What is virtualization in cloud computing?

It’s the technology underneath the cloud: providers run many virtual machines on shared hardware and rent them to customers.

Is Hyper-V good for business?

Yes. Hyper-V is included with Windows Server and is a reliable, cost-effective choice for most Microsoft-based businesses.

Our VMware renewal went up a lot. What can we do?

We review your licences, right-size them, or plan a migration to Hyper-V or Nutanix if it saves money over three years.

Can you migrate without downtime?

Most servers can be moved with only a short planned outage, usually out of hours. We test each one before switching over.

Do we need new hardware to virtualize?

Not always. Recent servers can often become virtualization hosts. We’ll check what you have first.

How many virtual servers can one host run?

It depends on the workloads and the hardware. A modern two-processor host commonly runs ten to thirty typical business servers. We size hosts based on measured usage plus growth.

Is virtualization secure?

Yes, when configured properly. Each virtual machine is isolated, and we apply the same patching, access control and backup practices as for physical servers, plus hardening of the hypervisor itself.

Can we mix virtualization with the cloud?

Yes. Many businesses keep some virtual machines on site and run others in Azure or AWS, with backups replicated to the cloud. We design hybrid setups that you manage from familiar tools.

Do you support virtualization environments built by others?

Yes. We audit the setup, fix risks such as missing backups or outdated hosts, then support it.
